It takes about 5 minutes to steam hot dogs in a steamer, or until they reach an internal temperature of 140°F. Here are some tips for steaming hot dogs:
- Preheat: Set the steamer to 375°F and bring the water to a boil, which can take 15–20 minutes.
- Add hot dogs: Place the hot dogs in the steamer basket and hang it on the drain clips.
- Steam: Close the lid and steam for about 5 minutes.
- Water: Use distilled water to extend the life of the heating element. You can also use hot water to reduce preheating time.
- Spacing: Place hot dogs loosely in the steamer to allow steam to circulate between them.
- Buns: Warm buns in the steamer compartments, but don't leave them in for too long or they'll get soggy.
- Multiple batches: If you're cooking multiple batches, the water may get greasy and need to be changed frequently.
Steaming helps retain nutrients and flavor, and removes excess fat. Hot dog steamers also cook hot dogs consistently, so you don't have to worry about undercooked or burnt hot dogs.
